The Best 31 Musical Movies On Netflix UK

[Updated 9th September 2021]

Need to get your musical theatre fix? You’re in the right place.

Ever since I was little, I’ve had a passion for musical theatre. I don’t know whether it’s the songs or the production as a whole, but I find them so comforting and incredibly addictive.

I’m lucky enough to have seen a lot of musicals but, I’m always on the search for something new to see. And what better than being able to enjoy a musical from the comfort of your own home?!

Whether you’re a die-hard musicals fan, or just looking for something new to watch, I’m sharing the best musical movies on Netflix UK.

Jazz hands at the ready?

Musical Movies On Netflix UK

Netflix Musical Movies

1 – Mamma Mia! (2008)

Mamma Mia! is based on the Abba jukebox musical, Mamma Mia! The story centres around a wedding at a family-owned taverna in Greece. However, things aren’t all smooth sailing as the bride tries to work out who her father is before the big day. Starring Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, and Julie Walters both films had huge box office success and the cast.

2 & 3 – Annie (1982) & (2014)

You have two adaptations of Annie to choose from on Netflix UK. Both are based on the Tony Award-winning musical, best known for the songs ‘Tomorrow’ and ‘It’s the Hard Knock Life’. Set in 1930’s New York, it follows the story of an orphan and her adoption by a rich businessman. Both films are good adaptations, with the more recent film starring Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx.

4 – Shrek The Musical (2013)

The musical adaptation of the hit film, Shrek is the story of how an ogre fell in love with a princess and made a lot of friends along the way.

5 – Les Miserables (2012)

Based on the classic Victor Hugo novel, this epic tale follows Jean Valjean as he tries to start a new life and seek justice for an unfair jail sentence. Starring the likes of Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, and Eddie Redmayne, it has a star-studded cast that won’t fail to impress.

6 – Rocketman (2019)

This musical biopic showcases the life of Elton John, set to some of his most-loved hit songs. Starring Taron Egerton, it has won countless awards including Best Actor (for Egerton) at the Golden Globe Awards in 2020 and Best Original Song at the Academy Awards in 2020.

7 – A Week Away (2021)

A new addition to Netflix, this uplifting Christan teen musical follows a troubled teen who is attending a summer camp. Choosing to attend rather than going to juvie, he soon gets caught up in the camp activities, making friends, and even falling in love.

8 – Happy Feet 2 (2011)

Staring the voices of Elijah Wood, Robin Williams, Brad Pitt, and many more, this star-studded sequel is a true family favourite. Erik the penguin is unable to dance like the other penguins but makes an unlikely hero when the colony is under threat.

9 – Dirty Dancing (1987)

An iconic coming-of-age film about Frances “Baby” Houseman’s summer at a vacation resort. Whilst not technically a musical film, it has a killer soundtrack and beautiful dance scenes so had to make this list of musical films on Netflix.

10 – Funny Girl (1968)

Based on the story of Broadway star Fanny Brice, Funny Girl is another musical classic. Receiving 8 Academy Award Nominations, Barbra Streisand and Omar Sharif portray the turbulent relationship between Brice and the entrepreneur Nicky Arnstein. Often included in the best musical films of all time, you might be more familiar with the song ‘Don’t Rain on My Parade’.

11 – Pitch Perfect (2012)

One of my favourite musical films on Netflix is Pitch Perfect. Focusing on the Barden University Bellas, a female a capella singing group that competes at major competitions, its soundtrack is a mix of well-known hits and new releases. Starring Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson, they’re easy-watching and hilarious.

12 – Burlesque (2010)

It’s the usual story of a small-town performer with incredible talent, wanting to make a name for herself in the city. In this case, Ali (played by Christina Aguilera) dreams of taking centre stage at an LA burlesque lounge and enlists the help of an established star, Tess (played by Cher). With two huge voices, it’s not surprising that the movie received 2 Grammy Awards and won a Golden Globe for Best Original Song.

13 – Opening Night (2016)

If you’re looking for something a bit cheesy and easy to watch, this is the musical movie for you. Telling the story of what goes on behind the curtain of a Broadway musical, Opening Night is a must-watch for musical fans. Watch as a production manager tries to save the show and stop the cast and crew from ruining the opening night. It’s cheesy in places, but an easy and enjoyable watch.

14 – Corpse Bride (2005)

One of Time Burton’s animated masterpieces, Corpse Bride is absolutely stunning. Set in the 1800s a nervous groom decides to practice his wedding vows in the woods. However, at the exact moment, he gets the right, a woman rises from the ground, believing she has just married him. Now with two brides, which one will the groom choose?

15 – Holy Camp! (2017)

This Spanish musical is about two troubled teens who attend a Christian summer camp. In a bid to modernize the camp, the teens and nuns work together on a life-changing musical project.

16 – A Star is Born (2018)

The directorial debut of Bradley Cooper, A Star is Born earned 8 nominations at the Academy Awards including Best Actress for Lady Gaga. It also won Best Original Song for “Shallow” at the Gold Globe Awards, making it an unmissable musical movie.

17 – Been So Long (2018)

Set in Camden Town in London, Been So Long follows a single mother, Simone, who meets a stranger, Raymond, on a night out with friends. But, has a past and Simone isn’t sure whether she should lower her guard and trust him. Full of interesting characters, this is a great choice for those looking for something a bit different.

18 – Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (2020)

I am in love with the Eurovision Song Contest so a film about it is right up my street. Starring Will Ferrel and Rachel McAdams Pierce Brosnan and Demi Lovato, the film follows two small-town Icelandic singers who get the opportunity to represent Iceland at the European Song Contest. It’s very cheesy, but, for me, that is what Eurovision is all about.

19 – A Cinderella Story: Christmas Wish (2019)

Looking for a festive musical movie on Netflix? A Cinderella Story: A Christmas Wish is the perfect choice. Starring Laura Marano and Gregg Sulkin, it\’s a modern take on the fairytale Cinderella, with a Christmas twist. There are not too many songs, but still worth a watch.

20 – Trolls Holiday (2017)

Another seasonal special, Trolls Holiday is a Christmas mini-film based on the hit film, Trolls. Featuring the voices of Anna Kendrick, Justin Timberlake, and Zooey Deschanel, it’s a family favourite that is sure to bring some colour to your day.

21 – Glee (2009 – 2015)

My last suggestion isn’t a movie, but I couldn’t not include it in this list. Glee is a 6 season TV series centring on the William McKinley High School glee club. Featuring an incredible cast and covering some of the most well-known songs, it’s the ultimate boxset for musical theatre lovers.

22 – Yesterday (2019)

A musical comedy directed by the incredible Danny Boyle and written by Richard Curtis. Yesterday is a great easy-to-watch musical film on Netflix UK. Staring the amazing Lily James, it follows a musician who suddenly finds himself the only person who has ever heard any of the Beatles songs and takes credit for their work.

23 – Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)

A fabulous slasher fi;m directed by Tim Burton, Sweeney Todd is adapted from the 1979 Tony-Award winning musical of the same name. Set in Victorian London, it follows an English barber-turned-serial-killer who seeks revenge for being framed for a crime he did not commit.

24 – Prom (2020)

Starring the legendary Meryl Streep and Nicole Kidman, this top-rated film follows a group of has-been Broadway stars who move to a small town in Indiana, USA. As they slowly become part of the community, they help a teenager who just wants to attend her prom with her girlfriend.

Created by Monty Python’s Eric Idle, What About Dick and stars Billy Connolly, Ti Curry, and Russel Brand. The film is in a comedy play format and is about the decline and fall of the British Empire, accompanied by a piano.

26 – Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Jouney (2020)

A lovely family-friendly Christmas film, Jingle Jangle follows a downtrodden toymaker as he rediscovers the magic of Christmas through his kind granddaughter. Staring the likes of Hugh Bonneville, it’s bound to get you into the festive spirit.

27 – Over The Moon (2020)

A stunning animated film Over The Moon is a heartwarming film about a girl called Fei Fei and her mission to prove the existence of a legendary moon goddess. Armed with the stories her mother told her before she died, this family-friendly film is a tear-jerker.

28 – Dolly Parton’s Christmas On the Square (2020)

The iconic Dolly Parton brings you seasonal cheer with this incredible festive film. When a cold-hearted woman tries to sell her hometown’s land, you think Christmas would be ruined. But, with music and magic, the community helps her remember what makes this small town special.

29 – Small Foot (2018)

Starring Channing Tatum and James Corden, Small Foot is a family-friendly animated musical adventure that follows Migo on a quest to prove that a species called “small foot” (aka a human) exists.

30 – Tommy (1975)

Based on the Who’s 1989 rock opera, Tommy is an old musical film, but worth a watch. After witnessing the murder of his stepfather, Tommy becomes psychosomatically deaf, dumb and blind. However, he soon discovers a talent for pinball and becomes famous in the process.

31 – Diana: The Musical (2021)

Being released on 1st October, Netflix is exclusively showing a fi; med performance of Diana: The Musical before its official Broadway opening.
